
Former MLA Nirmal Ghosh Arrested for Role in Doctor’s Cremation, Flees Then Traced
Abuse of power and suppression of justice are suspected in the hurried cremation.
On Wednesday, August 13, 2026, Nirmal Ghosh, former Trinamool Congress MLA from Panihati, was arrested by the West Bengal Police for his alleged role in the hurried cremation of a 31-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The arrest came after a fresh FIR was lodged on August 9, 2026, by the victim’s father at Khardah police station following Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's direction. Ghosh fled to Odisha but was traced and arrested from a hotel in Puri. He will be produced before Kolkata court on Friday, August 14, 2026.
